Super Mario Odyssey - amiibo Functions Guide

Super Mario Odyssey is finally here, and it brought with it three new amiibo figures – Mario, Bowser and Peach in their wedding clothes. The game is compatible with these and other amiibo, with a few different functions to trigger. Let’s break down what you can do with your amiibo figures in the game.

Uncle amiibo

Uncle amiibo is your main port of call for amiibo use. You can first encounter him once you’ve beaten the boss of the Cascade Kingdom, he’s the little roomba-like character who’s waiting near where you started the level. From then on you can find him at the starting point of any kingdom once you’ve beaten the guided ‘story’ portion of it. Speak to him and you’ll be able to get him to scan any amiibo figure to search for a Power Moon location. Up to three amiibo can search for moons at once, and you’ll need to wait five minutes for them to return before you can scan another. Once they come back you’ll have the locations of uncollected Power Moons marked on your map.

If you scan certain amiibo at this point then you’ll unlock a hat and outfit for Mario to wear. These are unlockable in-game without amiibo, but scanning amiibo will save you some time. You can view a video showcasing each of these costumes below, and then continue scrolling to see which amiibo will unlock each one.

In-Game Bonuses

You can scan any amiibo at any time during gameplay by holding the right directional button. Doing so will bring the amiibo icon up on the screen and allow you to tap an amiibo (but it won’t pause the game so watch out).

Invincibility

Super Mario Odyssey - Invincibility amiibo Bonus

This power-up will temporarily stop your Life from depleting when enemies attack you. All variants of Mario amiibo will grant this ability.

Life-Up Heart

Super Mario Odyssey - Life-Up amiibo Bonus

This power-up will give you a special heart that raises your maximum Life by 3 until the extra Life is depleted. Any variant of Peach will grant this bonus.

Coins

This bonus gives you a few extra coins to spend on items. Some amiibo that give this bonus are:

  • Bowser Jr.
  • Daisy
  • Donkey Kong
  • Rosalina
  • Waluigi

Heart

This power-up will restore a single point of life. Some amiibo that give this bonus are:

  • Diddy Kong
  • Luigi

Regional Coin Locations

Super Mario Odyssey - Regional Coin Locator amiibo Bonus

This power-up will mark the location of some uncollected Regional Coins on your screen. Rather than putting them on the map, a purple circle will appear somewhere on the screen. Rotate your camera until you can see it, and then head in that direction to find some purple coins.

All variants of Bowser amiibo will grant this bonus.

Wedding amiibo

Three new amiibo launched alongside the game – Mario, Peach and Bowser in their wedding outfits. You can scan these amiibo via Uncle amiibo to unlock three wedding outfits for Mario based on the outfits worn by the amiibo. Yes, that includes Peach’s dress. Like the other amiibo outfits these can be unlocked in-game without the amiibo, but it will be a while before you can do so.

By scanning these amiibo during gameplay you can get one of three special bonuses (as described above in the Power-Ups section). Mario will give you temporary invincibility, Peach will give you a Life-Up Heart and Bowser will reveal the location of some uncollected regional coins.

You can see these outfits and bonus in action in the video below.

Super Mario Cereal amiibo

Some news that took the internet by storm in 2017 was that Nintendo and Kellogg’s were partnering together to produce a Super Mario cereal with a box that acts as an amiibo. Watch our testing of the cereal’s taste and function below:

The amiibo is recognised in-game as a “delicious amiibo” but does not unlock anything. It can be used to find Power Moon hints from Uncle amiibo or to get coins or hearts by scanning it elsewhere in the game.

Super Mario Odyssey is out now for the Nintendo Switch, and so are the Wedding Clothes variant amiibo figures of Mario, Bowser and Peach.
