UPDATE: Details on the Wii U version’s use of amiibo have been added to the bottom of the article

The 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (god, that’s a mouthful) comes out tomorrow, and it turns out I had no idea it used amiibo, so uh… oops? Thankfully Nintendo’s site for the game details how they’re used. It’s one of those games that uses them for small bonuses rather than a significant feature. Once you’ve unlocked the Mario or Sonic costume for your Mii, you can use an amiibo of the respective character to power that costume up for 24 hours. Look at the handy graphic!

Any variant of Mario and Sonic can be used to trigger this. Sonic only has the one amiibo from the Smash Bros. series, but Mario loves the spotlight and has the following figures available for use:

  • Mario (Super Smash Bros. series)
  • Mario (Super Mario series)
  • Gold Mario (Super Mario series)
  • Silver Mario (Super Mario series)
  • Modern Colours Mario (30th Anniversary series)
  • Classic Colours Mario (30th Anniversary series)
  • Dr. Mario (Super Smash Bros. series)

The Wii U version works a little differently. When you tap a Mario or Sonic amiibo onto the GamePad, you’ll unlock a special tournament. Mario unlocks the Mario League, while Sonic unlocks the Sonic League. Completing these tournaments will unlock a special Mario or Sonic costume that will power-up your Mii. You can tap any amiibo other than Mario or Sonic to received rings or coins to use in the game’s Prize Machine.
