After a long wait, Nintendo have finally revealed their new console, which had been codenamed ‘NX’. The Nintendo Switch is a home console/portable hybrid with a detachable console and controllers. The console was shown off for the first time in a preview trailer which you can view below, that imagines a utopian society where everyone’s cool with you interrupting social gatherings with videogames. “I hope this first glimpse at Nintendo Switch has made our fans as excited as we are, and has captured their imagination with the possibilities and freedom of play it offers,” said Kamon Yoshimura, Managing Director of Nintendo Australia.

The Switch can be played as a home console by attaching it to the dock unit, allowing you to play games on your TV. By removing the console from the dock it will switch into a portable mode, which allows you to play games on the go with an HD display. The Switch uses the same cartridges for games regardless of whether it’s docked or in handheld mode, you don’t need to stream them from a console to the handheld.

The main console unit features detachable controllers, dubbed ‘Joy Cons’. You can use them like a traditional controller by snapping them onto either side of the tablet or into a grip accessory, or you can split them up between players to have local multiplayer sessions away from the TV. Multiple consoles can play locally with each other to aid this. If you’d prefer a more standard controller then you’ll be able to purchase a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller instead.

And luckily for me since I can post about the NX now – Switch will support amiibo! As with the Wii U and 3DS before it, not every game uses amiibo, but you’ll be able to use them with amiibo-compatible games.

A list of confirmed third parties who will be supporting the Switch can be seen below. Notable inclusions are Activision, TT Games, and Level-5, which could mean that the Switch will be getting new installments from the Skylanders, LEGO Dimensions, and Yo-kai Watch series respectively. No third party games have been officially confirmed though.
