Mario Sports Superstars - Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo have announced today that Mario Sports Superstars, a collection of sports games with a Mario twist, will be launching on 3DS March 11th in Australia and New Zealand. The game sports (sorry) singleplayer and multiplayer modes, and will launch alongside 90 new amiibo cards. These new cards portray the game’s 18 playable characters in each of the 5 sports available, and will be available for purchase in blind packs of 5 cards. Specially marked first-print copies of the game will include a random amiibo card in the box.

If you tap a character’s amiibo card, you’ll unlock a special ‘Star’ version of the character in the sport pictured on the card. A Star version of a character has better stats than the standard version, meaning you’ll have an advantage in that sport. Someone call the corruption watchdog on those Mario Brothers for being paid off by competitors. Tapping up to three of the cards will also allow you to enter the Road to Superstar mode. Completing this mode will upgrade characters even further, to Superstar status.

The five sports featured in the game are Soccer, Golf, Tennis, Baseball and Horse Racing. Soccer features full 11-a-side matches, in which you’ll need to master both team tactics and individual skills. Golf and Tennis are being developed by Camelot Software Planning, so fans of the Mario Golf and Mario Tennis series will feel right at home. The baseball mode is the first Mario-themed baseball game released here in over 10 years, since Australia missed out on Mario Super Sluggers on the Wii. In the Horse Racing mode you have to jump over obstacles, and collect carrots to maintain your stamina. You can also collect Stars to trigger a special Star Dash technique. You can care for your horses in the Stable Mode, which allows you to pet, groom and feed your horses in order to improve their performance.

The singleplayer component of Superstars contains tutorials and challenges to help you improve your skills, as well as tournaments for you to show them off in. In multiplayer you can take on your friends locally or online, and compete in online matches against players of similar skill to yours.

Mario Sports Superstars releases March 11th on Nintendo 3DS, alongside the new range of amiibo cards.
