Kirby Star Allies amiibo Functions and Unlocks Guide

Kirby Star Allies for the Nintendo Switch has some basic amiibo functions that you can use any of your amiibo with to gain some small bonuses. If you’ve got any figures of Kirby series characters or Qbby from BOXBOY then you’ll be able to get some bigger bonuses. There’s nothing exclusive tied to amiibo in this game, they’ll just provide some assistance in levels and help you get collectibles faster. Watch the video below for a quick explanation or keep reading for more details.

When you’re in the middle of a level you can pause the game and select the amiibo option to activate the amiibo functionality of the game. When prompted, tap any amiibo and you’ll be given some Star Bits, a healing item and a Puzzle Piece collectible. Puzzle Pieces earned through this manner will be added to your puzzle collection once you complete the level. If the amiibo you tap is one of the following amiibo:

  • Kirby (Kirby series)
  • King DeDeDe (Kirby series)
  • Meta-Knight (Kirby series)
  • Waddle Dee (Kirby series)
  • Kirby (Smash Bros. series)
  • King DeDeDe (Smash Bros. series)
  • Meta-Knight (Smash Bros. series)
  • Qbby (BOXBOY series)

Then you’ll get more Star Bits, a better healing item and two Puzzle Piece collectibles.

The following restrictions on amiibo usage apply:

  • You can only use 7 amiibo in each playthrough of a level
  • Each amiibo can’t be used again until you quit or complete the current level
  • You can use any number of amiibo per day
  • To use amiibo in The Ultimate Choice you need to be in the rest area

Here’s a breakdown of what each of the items an amiibo gives you is and what they do:

Star Bits are a common collectible scattered throughout levels that grant you an extra life when you collect 100 of them. These are so readily available that there’s no point scanning an amiibo to get them.

Healing items restore a bit of health, and the healing effects can be passed on to allies by bumping in them within a few seconds of using the item. The healing items gained from using amiibo of Kirby characters or Qbby will heal you more than the items gained from regular amiibo.

Puzzle Pieces are collectibles you can find in levels by breaking things and solving puzzles, and by playing extra modes unlocked by beating the game. Once you complete a level these pieces will be used to fill in jigsaw puzzles. Completing these puzzles doesn’t count towards 100% completion or give you any rewards, but it will let you look at some cute artwork. Using amiibo will ease the grind of completing every puzzle, but you won’t be able to complete each one with amiibo alone. Hidden each level is a Rare Puzzle Piece that is required to fill in parts of each puzzle. You’ll need to find each of these Rare Pieces in order to complete the puzzles as amiibo cannot give them to you.
