Super Mario Odyssey and Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga Will Launch Alongside New amiibo

UPDATE (15/06/17) – An Australian release date for Superstar Saga, the Goomba amiibo and the Koopa Troopa amiibo has now been confirmed.

Brace yourselves for all sorts of Mario goodness this October – there’ll be two games and five amiibo launching that month. Super Mario Odyssey is the big 3D Mario game that got people hyped up before the Switch’s release, and will see Mario exploring large open worlds in an effort to collect Power Moons to power his spaceship. He’ll be assisted by Cappy, a sentient hat who grants him various abilities including the power to control objects and POSSESS LIVING THINGS. It’s weird as heck, but it means you can play as a T-Rex or a Tank with a Mario moustache so sign me up. Odyssey will release October 27th alongside three new amiibo – Mario, Peach and Bowser dressed in wedding clothes that will no doubt be featured in many wedding cake photos on reddit. These amiibo will be available for purchase separately and also as a three-pack. You’ll also be able to use some existing amiibo with the game to “receive gameplay assistance” and unlock costumes for Mario.

Nintendo also revealed a remake of Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga for 3DS, which is subtitled Bowser’s Minions. The original Superstar Saga apparently released 14 years ago (which makes me feel incredibly old) and was the beginning of the Mario & Luigi series of RPGs. These games pair up Mario and Luigi (and sometimes other guest stars) against mainstay Mario enemies and new villains in turn-based battles, where expert timing is required in order to maximise damage and avoid enemy attacks. This remake will include a new mode called Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser where you’ll play as Bowser’s minions (hey, that’s the subtitle!) in an untold story behind the scenes of the main game.

Superstar Saga will be compatible with certain amiibo from the Super Mario series of figures, including two new ones – Goomba and Koopa Troopa. These two amiibo and the Boo amiibo will have some sort of special function that will save data to the amiibo. The game and the new amiibo will all launch on October 7th in Australia.
