Bye-Bye Boxboy for 3DS with Qbby amiibo

The final installment in the BOXBOY series, BYE-BYE BOXBOY! will release in Australia on March 24th for 3DS. It will be available from the eShop, priced at AU$7.50. The BOXBOY games take Qbby, a square-shaped hero, through a number of 2D side-scrolling levels. Players must use Qbby’s ability to create strings of boxes to solve a variety of puzzles that block his path.

BYE-BYE BOXBOY! will feature 180 levels across four planets, where Qbby will run into Qbabies – small lifeforms that are similar to him in appearance, and will grant him special new abilities should he escort them to safety. These include the bombox that will blow walls to smithereens, a box rocket that will allow you to soar through the air, and a remote box that can be used to reach far-away areas. The game will also feature unlockable Challenge Worlds which imposes different gameplay restrictions on the player, such as not allowing you to jump. For a taste of this gameplay, a demo containing levels from each game in the series is now available from the eShop.

BYE-BYE BOXBOY! will be the first in the series to support amiibo – scanning the amiibo of Kirby series characters (from the Kirby and Smash Bros. lines of amiibo) will let you dress Qbby up as Kirby, Meta Knight, Waddle Dee and King DeDeDe. Excitingly, the Japan-only Qbby amiibo will actually be available here – on March 24th Nintendo will be selling Japanese imports of them exclusively through their eBay store. Past products they’ve sold here have gone super fast, so if you’re after this one you’d better be quick. Pricing of the amiibo is not yet known.

Weirdly, the functions that the Qbby amiibo had in the Japanese version of the game appear to be unlockable in-game by transferring save data of previous games in the series to BYE-BYE BOXBOY! Players with save data from BOXBOY! on their Nintendo 3DS system can transfer an additional 10 costumes, and those with save data from BOXBOXBOY! can transfer an additional eight. The costumes from BOXBOY! include the Rabbit, which allows Qbby to jump higher, and the Wizard, which allows him to create an extra box, with a grand total of 37 costumes available. And if players have data from both of the previous game, they will unlock both a Qucy costume and the option to play the game with a Game Boy-style filter. We’ll let you know if we hear about what this amiibo will do in the Australian version of the game.
