LEGO Dimensions has a number of packs that add new levels into the game, focused on a particular brand. Level Packs add a single new level, while the Story Packs introduced as part of Year 2 add in a whopping 6 new levels that follow the plot of a specified movie. These two packs are the most expensive expansions that Dimensions has to offer, but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered – below you’ll find reviews of each Level Pack and Story Pack, as well as complete video playthroughs that will hopefully assist with your purchase decisions. This page will be regularly updated so if a pack hasn’t been added yet, be sure to check back later!

Year 1 Packs

Back to the Future Level Pack

Back to the Future is a series that seems perfectly suited to a LEGO game. A trilogy of classic films? Check. A cast of memorable characters? Check. However, when you start to think about what the levels would be, you realise that the movies are really dialogue-heavy, and large sections of the movie wouldn’t translate well to a game. You couldn’t really have an entire level where you build a giant cassette player which blasts Van Halen at George McFly. So in theory, LEGO Dimensions would be a brilliant opportunity for movies like this, because rather than padding out a whole game, they could have a level or two focusing on the highlights. Unfortunately the reality doesn’t deliver, as the Back to the Future Level Pack is a huge wasted opportunity.”

The Simpsons Level Pack

“The Simpsons content in Dimensions has been really inconsistent. The Story Level is fun, but the characters from the series are barely involved with it, and the music isn’t taken from the show. Homer’s a decent character with some fun lines taken from the show, but Krusty pretty much just laughs, and Bart doesn’t have a single line of dialogue! It’s obvious that something went wrong during license negotiations and the developers couldn’t get the rights to use everything. Thankfully though, the Simpsons Level Pack is pretty much on par with the rest of the game. You get a fun level based on a well-known Simpsons episode, with one of the best Adventure Worlds to boot.”

Portal 2 Level Pack

“Portal was one of the more surprising franchise choices for LEGO Dimensions. Portal wasn’t a franchise that had any LEGO sets at the time, and in fact there was even a LEGO Cuusoo pitch for a Portal series of sets that was rejected. But it’s a franchise choice to be thankful for, as Portal brings some of the stand-out content in Dimensions, and this Level Pack is no different. Of the three launch-day Level Packs, it was by far the best, and it still holds its ground against the newer ones. The Portal 2 Level Pack manages to mash the LEGO format together with Portal‘s style and mechanics to make a cool hybrid level that does the source material justice.”

Doctor Who Level Pack

“The Doctor Who Level Pack is definitely one of the ones that comes close to justifying the $50 price tag because of how much high-quality content it adds. Its level is ambitious in its scope, and the TARDIS unlocks a number of substantial areas in other parts of the game. If you’re a fan of the show you’ll get a lot out of everything this pack has to offer because it goes to lengths to cram in as much fanservice as it can. Those not familiar with Doctor Who should still enjoy the main level and the new areas the TARDIS can explore, but probably won’t get much out of the Adventure World that relies too much on fanservice.”

Ghostbusters Level Pack

“The Ghostbusters Level Pack is a much better single-level adaptation of a film than the Back to the Future Pack, and features fun ghostbusting mechanics and an Adventure World that fans will get a kick out of.”

Midway Arcade Level Pack

“The Level Packs that Dimensions offered in its first year were a big mixed bag, but the Midway Arcade Level Pack was a great pack to finish them off. While it may not be what you’re expecting, it combines a Midway game collection with the reliable LEGO formula, to great ends – you can play through the games in their natural states and then experience new LEGO takes on them in the fantastic Adventure World.”
