Metroid: Samus Returns - Chozo Memories

One of the new features introduced in Metroid: Samus Returns is a series of lore snippets called Chozo Memories. These are visible once you’ve completed the game and most of them are earned by finding all of the collectibles in each zone in the game. For every 25% completion in each zone you will unlock a quarter of that zone’s associated Chozo Memory, which will be completely filled-in and coloured once you reach 100%. If the 3D slider is flicked on they have a neat diorama-style effect. When you have them all you can witness the story of the Chozo and how SR388’s current state came to be, as well as a tease of things yet to come…

If you don’t want to see spoilers for Samus Returns then turn back now.

Surface

When going after this Chozo Memory, remember that the Surface area is split into two parts – the area you begin the game in and the endgame area you go through after fighting the final Metroid. Collectibles in each of these areas counts towards the same completion percentage. And if you’re trying and failing to get back to Samus’ ship through the tutorial area, don’t worry – you’re not meant to be able to go back that way and there’s no collectibles hidden there.

Overall Completion

The tenth and ‘final’ Chozo Memory will unlock once you have all the others as it’s tied to your overall completion percentage and not any specific zone.

Final Chozo Memory

Despite the game saying that there’s only ten Chozo Memories, there’s actually eleven. Once you’ve unlocked and viewed the other ten Chozo Memories, freaky music will start to play while your screen turns red and gradually phases into the final Chozo Memory – which certainly has some interesting implications.
