Final Four Smash Bros. amiibo

The Smash Bros. line of amiibo was originally going to end with figures of the final three DLC characters; Cloud, Bayonetta and Corrin. However, recently evidence of a fourth amiibo had surfaced. The abridged version is that registration numbers for four amiibo had surfaced and their id numbers suggested that they were all in the Smash Bros. line. People began speculating that this mystery amiibo was for a new character being added to a yet-to-be-revealed Switch port of Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS. The reality would appear to be infinitely less exciting.

Dataminers have been digging their way through Fire Emblem Echoes, and have found some interesting tidbits. The ones relevant to us all relate to the game’s Illusory Hero feature. Using amiibo of Fire Emblem characters will summon a phantom version of that character who will fight alongside you for one turn. It has been discovered that there’s actually data for two Corrin amiibo in the game, one male and one female.

Not only can both versions of Corrin be summoned in the game (unlike Robin, who’s male only), but there’s actually two different NFC tags the game can read as Corrin – one triggering the male summon, one triggering the female. So with all this evidence it’s pretty clear-cut that two of the final four Smash amiibo are both Corrin. The only other character to get a variant Smash Bros. amiibo is R.O.B. due to the fact his colouring is different in Japan and the West, I’m not really sure what makes Corrin so special, but oh well. You can see Female Corrin be summoned in the tweet below.

Given that this is a pretty significant use of amiibo it’s fair to say that the Corrin amiibo should be releasing sometime soon. This doesn’t necessarily rule out any new characters for a potential Smash port for Switch, but it’s always a good idea to temper your expectations. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia launches May 20th.
